About
This striking Venezuelan endemic is notable for its large, pitcher-like leaves and its restricted habitat on sandstone cliff faces. It is one of the few species in the genus to share a similar growth habit with *H. exappendiculata*.
Field notes
Morphology
The pitchers are substantial, measuring approximately 25–35 cm in length and 8–10 cm wide at the opening. The pitcher mouth is circular, and the back is raised to form a lid.
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to Venezuela, specifically found in a narrow canyon on Amurí-tepui at an elevation of approximately 1850 m, growing on sandstone cliff faces and in humus pockets and cracks.
Ecology
The plant uses tube-like leaves to trap insects. Digestive juices at the bottom of the pitcher slowly digest the prey item, providing additional nutrients.
