Monstera acuminata

Shingle plant

Family Araceae

About

The shingle plant is a climbing Monstera from Mexico and Central America and the most northerly species in the genus.

Field notes

Morphology

Begins as a low, creeping plant whose small, thick, waxy heart-shaped leaves overlap in two rows. On meeting a tree it climbs using clinging roots; adult leaves resemble those of Monstera deliciosa and appear once the plant is about 4.5 m up. The base of the stem later dies, leaving the plant rooted only in the air.

Distribution & habitat

Ranges from Mexico (north to San Luis Potosí) through Central America; abundant in central Petén, Guatemala.
