About

*Nepenthes hamiguitanensis* is a striking, endemic Philippine pitcher plant notable for its light-colored upper pitchers, which can range from creamy white to red speckled on a yellowish background. It is a climbing plant that thrives in the montane forest margins of Mount Hamiguitan.

Field notes

Morphology

The plant is a climbing species, reaching up to 4 m in height, with a cylindrical stem 8–10 mm in diameter. Leaves are elliptic to oblong, measuring up to 25 cm by 9 cm. Upper pitchers are infundibular in the basal half and cylindrical above, up to 20 cm high by 9 cm wide. They feature a prominent hip and waist, a cordate operculum up to 5 cm wide, and a peristome that is typically cylindrical, up to 1 cm wide, bearing ribs with short teeth.

Distribution & habitat

Endemic to the summit ridge of Mount Hamiguitan in San Isidro, Davao Oriental, Mindanao, Philippines. It is found at an altitudinal range of 1,200–1,600 m, particularly common above 1,400 m.

Ecology

The species grows terrestrially in primary montane forest and forest margins, typically in partial shade and exposed to heavy downpours. It is sympatric with N. justinae and N. micramphora, though it prefers shaded forest margins while the other species are often found in more exposed areas.

History & etymology

The specific epithet hamiguitanensis is derived from Mount Hamiguitan, the location of its endemic range. Although formally described in 2010 by Gronemeyer et al., a specimen was collected in 2007, and the holotype was designated V.Amoroso & R.Aspiras CMUH00006494.

Conservation

Assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN criteria due to its highly localized distribution. Its habitat is protected within the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary National Park.
